Meet Chris

Chris Tyhurst has been in public accounting since 1994. He joined REDW in 1996 and became a Principal with the firm in 2008. Chris is very involved in the Firm’s Tribal practice, as well as its healthcare industry service team. He also serves as Quality Control Director of the Audit & Consulting Department.

Chris has extensive experience auditing Native American tribes and their enterprises, including hospitals and health centers. He has also provided many other financial and strategic consulting services to tribes, including internal controls, enterprise board training, financial forecasts, and staff training on accounting and federal grant management topics. And for more than a decade, Chris spearheaded and served as Conference Chair for REDW’s annual Tribal Finance & Leadership Conference.

He has also developed a broad base of knowledge in the healthcare industry by performing financial audits and consulting with many hospitals and healthcare organizations in the areas of patient accounts receivable and internal controls. A Past-President of the New Mexico chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), Chris has presented at regional HFMA conferences on accounting and financial reporting matters, as well as risk assessment and internal controls.

Professional Qualifications and Memberships

A Certified Public Accountant, Chris is a member of the following professional organizations:

  • American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)
  • Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants (ASCPA) – Board of Directors
  • Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) – past President of the New Mexico Chapter

“One of the most rewarding aspects of working with Tribes is seeing them make great strides towards providing much-needed healthcare to underserved communities. One example is Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation, which recently opened the first cancer treatment center in all of Indian Country. Tribes have significantly improved the quality, breadth and depth of healthcare services available to their communities by taking over healthcare operations from the federal government under PL 93-638 contracts. It’s critical for these Tribal healthcare organizations to have solid business practices and strong financial management, to maximize services to Tribal members using the limited funds available. I’m proud that REDW has played a small part in this by providing audit, accounting, tax, HR, software, IT, investment management, employee benefit plan administration and other key business services to Tribal healthcare organizations.”
