New CARES Act Grants Now Available for Tribal Healthcare

April 24, 2020

Good news for tribes: The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is now accepting applications for the fiscal year 2020 Rural Tribal COVID-19 Response Program (HRSA-20-135). The deadline for applications is May 6, 2020.

“Like all rural healthcare providers, tribal healthcare organizations are struggling to contain new outbreaks and care for tribal members with pre-existing conditions and other underlying COVID-19 risk factors,†said Chris Tyhurst, Principal and leader of REDW’s national healthcare practice. “These grants should provide welcome financial relief.â€

The program is designed to assist tribes, tribal organizations, urban Indian health organizations, and health service providers to respond to the risk of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in rural communities. Funding focuses on activities that may include, but are not limited to:

  • establishing testing sites,
  • purchasing test kits,
  • implementing telehealth strategies/activities,
  • purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE) and other supplies, and
  • hiring and/or training healthcare providers and other healthcare personnel to provide care for COVID-19 patients.

Program funding details:

  • Expected number of awards: 50
  • Estimated total Program funding: $15,000,000
