A recognized expert on claiming Social Security (SS) benefits, REDW Wealth Senior Financial Planner David Cechanowicz has once again been featured in The Street, most recently in a July 23, 2020 column, by Robert Powell, CFA, titled, “Ask Bob: Can You Collect Social Security on Your Ex-spouse?†In a video interview and article, Cechanowicz addresses a reader’s question about entitlement to SS benefits for divorced spouses, noting that, while entitlement is generally favored, it is contingent upon a number of factors, such as:
- Length of the marriage
- Your age and that of your ex-spouse
- Your current status as divorced or remarried
- Whether or not you have filed for divorced spouse benefits
- Whether or not your ex-spouse is entitled to benefits of SS retirement or disability
- The amount of your benefit entitlement compared to that of your ex-spouse
In the interview, Cechanowicz also touches on entitlement to SS survivor benefits for those who have outlived their spouse.
