IRS Announces E-file for 1040-X

IRS Announces E-file for 1040-X

August 20, 2020

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced a progressive step in modernization on Monday, August 17: taxpayers using commercial tax software can now electronically file amended individual returns. Although currently limited to 2019 Forms 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Returns, and 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors, other forms may eventually become eligible for electronic filing as well.

Up until the announcement, taxpayers could only file amended individual returns on a paper Form 1040-X. Being able to submit these forms electronically has long been an IRS goal, since e-filing simplifies and streamlines the process for taxpayers, and reduces opportunities for error.

If preferable, individuals may still file a paper Form 1040-X. Both paper and e-filers may track the status of their returns, using the provided Where’s My Amended Return tool on the IRS website.
