The Challenges of Healthcare Reform

With the passage of the 2010 health reform bill, many hospitals are facing the requirement of improving the quality of patient care while at the same time reducing costs.  Transitioning from a volume-based business model to a value-based business model is leaving some hospitals wondering if they will survive until 2014 when the bill brings coverage to an additional 32 million people.  Some of the challenges hospitals are struggling with include:

  • Implementing a coordinated patient care system where hospitals work with healthcare providers after the patient leaves the hospital with the goal of eliminating return visits
  • Improving safety and care procedures
  • Creating electronic medical records (EMR) systems to better provide coordinated services between healthcare professionals
  • Fronting the cost for these new systems so they are in place as required in 2014, and
  • Reducing operating costs to meet the reduction in Medicare and Medicaid payments to hospitals.
